Public details: If you’re looking for one of the most beautiful paddles in Florida, Juniper Run is hard to beat. It winds through the heart of the Ocala National Forest, beginning at Juniper Springs Recreation Area and ending about 7 miles downstream at Juniper Wayside. Here’s what to expect: * Length: About 7 miles. * Time: Most paddlers take 4–5 hours, though beginners or people who stop frequently can take much longer. * Water: Crystal clear, spring-fed water that stays around 72°F year-round. * Scenery: A tunnel of palms, cypress, oak, and lush vegetation that feels almost tropical. The first few miles are especially narrow and winding. Difficulty Despite the peaceful appearance, Juniper Run is not recommended for beginners. The U.S. Forest Service specifically warns that the run includes: * Tight turns * Low-hanging branches * Fallen trees and submerged obstacles * Very few places to pull over or get out of your kayak Because it’s a designated wilderness area, the channel is kept only minimally cleared, preserving its wild character. Wildlife You’ll likely see: * Alligators (usually keeping to themselves) * River otters * Turtles * Wading birds * Herons and egrets * Deer * Fish visible through the clear water The area is also known for rare albino gray squirrels near the springs. Planning your trip If you’re bringing your own kayak: * You must launch before 1:00 p.m. * Inflatable kayaks and tubes are not permitted. * Because it’s a one-way trip, you’ll need either: * Two vehicles (leave one at the take-out), or * A shuttle service if available through Juniper Creek Run Canoe & Kayak Rental. What to bring * Plenty of water * Sunscreen (there are sunny stretches despite the canopy) * Bug spray * Dry bag for phone and keys * Comfortable clothing that can get wet Safety Summer afternoons often bring thunderstorms, so an early morning launch is the safest choice. The Forest Service also advises staying in your boat—swimming in the run is not allowed.
