| Public details: The book details the almost 2-year struggle for survival endured by the 28-man crew of the exploration ship, ENDURANCE, that was trapped in ice in 1914. They drifted for over one year and were able to launch 3 small boats and land on Elephant Island off the coast of Antarctica. Through dead reckoning, Shackleton was able to navigate away and 3 months later rescued the remaining crew members who had been left behind on Elephant Island. The book is based on accounts taken from the diaries of the crew and lengthy interviews with them.
